Call for Abstracts – Mini-Symposium MS196 at WCCM-ECCOMAS 2026

November 24, 2025

We are pleased to announce the upcoming Mini-Symposium MS196: Deployable, Adaptive and Intelligent Structures in Engineering and Soft Robotics, which will be held as part of the WCCM-ECCOMAS 2026 Congress in Munich, Germany, from 19 to 24 July 2026.

This event is organized by
Malte von Scheven (University of Stuttgart),
Renate Sachse (Technical University of Munich),
Aniket Pal (University of Stuttgart),
Ann Sychterz (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign),
Edoardo Milana (University of Freiburg).

About the Mini-Symposium

MS196 brings together researchers working on the design, analysis and control of adaptive, compliant and deployable structures, with a strong emphasis on soft robotics and systems that demonstrate embodied intelligence. The symposium aims to create a platform for presenting cutting-edge research, discussing emerging ideas, and building new collaborations across disciplines such as computational mechanics, robotics, structural engineering and applied physics.

Topics of Interest

The scientific scope includes a broad range of subjects related to adaptive and intelligent mechanical systems, including:

  • Computational modeling and simulation of compliant and soft structures

  • Optimization approaches, including form finding and actuator design

  • Design of flexible structures capable of large, controlled deformations

  • Motion planning and control strategies for adaptive systems

  • Sensor and actuator placement, model-based control and autonomy

  • Materials and mechanisms enabling embodied intelligence

  • Active and passive control for efficient deformation and energy use

  • Reliability, robustness and fail-safe strategies in adaptive systems

  • Deployable, reconfigurable and morphing structural concepts

  • Integration of machine learning with soft and adaptive mechanisms

Abstract Submission

Researchers are invited to submit abstracts and share their latest findings in this rapidly advancing field. The WCCM-ECCOMAS congress takes place only once every two years and, combined with WCCM, is expected to be one of the largest international gatherings in computational mechanics and related areas.
